Open the roulette section of any UK casino and you will find a dozen or more tables that look much the same: a wheel, a layout, a ball. Underneath, they are not the same at all. One extra pocket on the wheel doubles the house edge. One French rule halves it on even-money bets. A random multiplier changes what a straight-up bet pays. This guide explains how to choose between the variants, how the racetrack bets work, the difference between RNG and live tables, and the UK rules that apply to roulette and the ones that do not.

Choose the wheel before anything else
The single biggest decision in roulette is which wheel you play. Bet selection barely matters by comparison, because on a standard wheel every bet carries the same edge.
| Variant | Pockets | House edge | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| French roulette (la partage) | 37 (single zero) | 1.35% on even-money bets; 2.70% on others | The best option if you play red/black, odd/even or high/low |
| European roulette | 37 (single zero) | 2.70% | The sensible default |
| American roulette | 38 (0 and 00) | 5.26% | Same payouts, nearly double the cost |
| Multiplier variants | Usually 37 | Varies; check the published RTP | Reduced straight-up payouts offset by random multipliers |
If a UK casino offers both European and American tables, there is no rational reason to choose the American one. The payouts are identical; only the odds are worse.
Learn what la partage actually does
On a French roulette table with la partage, if the ball lands on zero, even-money bets are not lost outright. You get half your stake back. Some tables use en prison instead, where the bet is held for the next spin. Either way, the house edge on even-money bets falls from 2.70% to 1.35%. The rule does not apply to inside bets, dozens or columns.
Read the table name carefully. A table called “French roulette” is not always played with la partage. Open the help screen and look for the rule, or check that the published RTP for even-money bets is 98.65%.
Know the standard bets
For reference, these are the payouts on a single-zero wheel. Inside bets go on specific numbers; outside bets cover larger groups.
| Bet type | Bet | Numbers | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inside | Straight up | 1 | 35:1 |
| Inside | Split | 2 | 17:1 |
| Inside | Street | 3 | 11:1 |
| Inside | Corner | 4 | 8:1 |
| Inside | Six line | 6 | 5:1 |
| Outside | Column or dozen | 12 | 2:1 |
| Outside | Red/black, odd/even, 1-18/19-36 | 18 | 1:1 |
Use the racetrack if you like sector bets
Most online European and French tables include a racetrack, an oval layout showing the numbers in wheel order. It lets you place classic French “call bets” that cover sections of the wheel in one click.
| Call bet | Wheel section | Numbers covered | Chips |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voisins du Zéro | The 17 numbers around zero | 17 | 9 |
| Tiers du Cylindre | The third of the wheel opposite zero | 12 | 6 |
| Orphelins | The two remaining sections | 8 | 5 |
| Jeu Zéro | The 7 numbers closest to zero | 7 | 4 |
Call bets are a convenient way to place several splits and straight-ups at once. They do not change the house edge. Online, the wheel is either a certified random number generator or a physical wheel in a studio, so “sections” have no special significance beyond the bets they group together.
Pick between RNG and live tables
RNG (digital) roulette
- Play at your own pace
- Often low minimum stakes
- Results from a tested random number generator
- Easy to learn without pressure
Live roulette
- A real wheel and croupier, streamed from a studio
- Slower, fixed betting windows
- Social feel and chat
- Minimum stakes set by the table
The edge is the same on equivalent wheels. The difference is pace. A digital table you control can run much faster than a live one, which raises the hourly cost at the same stake. If you play RNG roulette, pace yourself deliberately.
Work out what an hour costs
Expected cost per hour = stake × spins per hour × house edge. At £2 a spin on red:
- French table with la partage: 1.35% edge. At 40 spins an hour, about £1.08.
- European table: 2.70%. At 40 spins, about £2.16.
- American table: 5.26%. At 40 spins, about £4.21.
Double the spins per hour, as you easily can on a fast digital table, and every figure doubles. These are averages; individual sessions swing well above and below them.
Understand which UK rules apply to roulette
Several UK rules that get a lot of attention apply to online slots only. Roulette players should know which ones do and do not cover their game.
| Rule | Applies to online roulette? |
|---|---|
| £5 / £2 stake limits | No, online slots only |
| 2.5-second minimum spin speed and no autoplay | No, these game design rules were written for online slots |
| Age and identity verification before play | Yes |
| Credit card ban | Yes |
| GAMSTOP | Yes |
| 10x bonus wagering cap | Yes, for any bonus |
| Deposit limit prompts | Yes, account-wide |
Because the slot stake limits do not apply, roulette tables can accept much larger bets. That makes your own limits more important, not less.
Practise before you stake
Many UK casinos offer demo versions of roulette tables. Since 2019, the Gambling Commission has required operators to verify your age before you can use free-to-play versions of their games, so you will need an account. Demo play is a good way to learn the racetrack, practise placing bets quickly within a live table’s betting window and check the rules of a variant, all without risking money.
Watch for novelty variants
Alongside the classic wheels, you will find variations with smaller wheels, double balls, extra side bets or random multipliers. Each changes the maths. Smaller wheels in particular can carry a much higher edge, because one zero pocket among fewer numbers takes a bigger share. Always open the help screen and look for the published RTP before playing a variant you do not know. If the RTP is lower than 97.30%, you are paying more than you would on a standard European table.
Skip the systems
Martingale, Fibonacci, d’Alembert and the rest change the size of your bets, never the edge. Doubling after losses can climb from £2 to over £500 in eight losing spins. Online tables have maximum stakes, and your budget has a ceiling too. Flat betting keeps the cost predictable.
Set a stake that matches your budget
A simple rule of thumb: keep each bet to a small fraction of your session budget, so a normal run of losses does not end the evening in minutes. Because roulette is not covered by the slot stake limits, it is your own discipline that sets the ceiling.
Check bonuses before using them on roulette
Roulette often contributes little or nothing to bonus wagering, and some bonuses exclude covering most of the table. If you mainly play roulette, a cash-only approach is often simpler. See our bonus guide.
- Confirm the casino is UKGC-licensed. Our licence check guide shows how.
- Choose French (with la partage) or European.
- Read the table’s help screen for rules and RTP.
- Set a deposit limit and session time.
- Bet flat and stop at your limit.
